United States Supreme Court Associate Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson. Alex Wong/Getty ImagesJustice Ketanji Brown Jackson warned that absolute immunity could turn the Oval Office into "the seat of criminal activity in this country." She said there would no incentive for presidents to follow the law while in the White House if they could never face criminal prosecution. "There are lots of people who have to make life and death decisions" and still face the risk of criminal prosecution, she said. I think that we would have a really significant opposite problem if the president wasn’t chilled," she said.

Seventy-five percent of small business owners are optimistic about their financial trajectory in 2024, up from 68% a year earlier, according to a survey by Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Business Voices, a policy advocate for small business owners. More than half of small business owners surveyed said they expect to create jobs this year, and 62% reported they anticipate profits will increase. The survey was conducted nationally in mid-January among more than 1,400 small business owners. Interestingly, small business owners found 2023 nearly as hard as 2020 — the peak of the pandemic and a time when many companies could not operate. Inflation is still a major concern for business owners, even as the rate of price increases falls.

Senate Republicans and Democrats have attempted to negotiate border-related legislation for weeks. Trump is pushing his supporters in Congress to kill the bill to gain an upper hand in the election. No public text has been released despite months of negotiations, even senators have complained that they are receiving few details from the discussions between Sen. James Lankford, an Oklahoma Republican, and Senate Democrats. "Using a one-time spending package to enact these unrelated permanent policy changes sets a dangerous precedent and risks assistance to our international partners," 11 Senate Democrats said in a statement about the talks. Photo: Alex Wong/Getty ImagesWASHINGTON—Top U.S. lawmakers unveiled a bipartisan tax agreement that would revive expired breaks for businesses and increase the child tax credit for low-income families, and they are aiming to push the $78 billion in tax breaks through Congress in the next few weeks. The deal comes from Sen. Ron Wyden (D., Ore.) and Rep. Jason Smith (R., Mo. ), ideological opponents who found common ground after months of talks. They have a tough task ahead, given skepticism about aspects of the deal in both parties and a tight deadline before tax season starts.

Photo: Alex Wong/Getty ImagesPressure on the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. over allegations of a toxic work environment mounted this week, as the agency’s internal watchdog launched its own inquiry and a Republican senator requested records related to settlements and nondisclosure agreements. The FDIC’s inspector general will examine the “leadership climate at the FDIC with regard to all forms of harassment and inappropriate behavior,” a spokeswoman said. The IG will also assess the agency’s sexual harassment prevention program, including looking at what steps the FDIC has taken since a 2020 IG report found that program was flawed.
